Banners #11&12 - Riley and Nancy

Two more banner experiments: Riley Finn and Nancy Stark.

Large versions and notes under the cut. Feedback would be awesome! :)

Banner #11:
Riley Finn
Notes:
For Riley, I tried to go for very intense tones and elements. Some of his most important scenes in the TV series involved helicopters (and that certainly holds true in the fic, as well) so I searched for a good chopper that I could silhouette against a sunset. I think the Blucas manip is mostly convincing, although I could work on the uniform lighting more, as well as on the contrast of the dragon.

Banner #12:
Nancy Stark
I hesitated on including any O.C.'s in this series, but since
aerintine suggested Deborah Ann Woll as a casting choice, I decided to google around for some photos of her. There were tons to choose from, but I thought there was something very mysterious and interesting about this one, with its overexposure and forced perspective. And after watching a few clips of her on "True Blood," Woll does actually remind me a bit of the way I picture the character in my head, so I decided to give it a try.
The manip involved selectively altering color levels in portions of the picture. After some experiments on turning the toga/dress thing black, I decided to leave the color as is (actually even saturate it a bit more) because I liked the sudden contrast of color. The background with the torn away piece of the world is more or less a direct story element. Not a hundred percent happy with my font choices here, and if I take another stab at this I might try scanning in my own handwriting instead.

These banners are so awesome! If I were still drawing (which unfortunately I haven't in a long time) I would totally want to make a comic strip for this and send it to Joss with a letter attached saying:
'five words or less?'
'THIS is my canon!...bitch' :)

Awwwhawhawhaw... Nice reference!
Joss is still pretty cool, though. It's at least cool he doesn't sue us, right?

Date: 2011-03-21 02:48 am (UTC)And Nancy is STUNNING OMG SHE'S TERRIFYING. How did you find a picture of Woll that's so PERFECT? Her connection to the Now comes through in this. This really captures her. The only thing missing in this banner for me is some reminder that she is, in essence, a gardner - she likes to make things, and make them grow.

Date: 2011-03-21 03:41 am (UTC)I'm glad you liked Riley's. I was actually thinking it didn't really work, but I feel more confident about it now.
As for Woll, I burnt a small offering and asked the Great Google. There were a TON of big, usuable pics of her, and each of them suggested a different direction. In fact, it's funny you mention the "gardener" aspect, because the first version of it I worked on used a completely different picture, and was all lush greenery / hothouse imagery. I sort of gave up on it halfway through, and decided to go with a more direct horror angle. I might revisit the former treatment, though. I was just afraid it was getting a little Uma-Thurman-Poison-Ivy-ish.

Date: 2011-03-21 04:48 am (UTC)Ugh. No. Eugh.
What about something that could be layered over or under the image you already have but not mess with the color scheme? Like a silhouette of a creeping vine or somesuch? I have no idea where one would find such a thing, however.
The horror element you've got going in the banner is so well-done though that it might ruin the stark effect to add anything? HA! I just said "stark" effect. I pun when I don't even mean to. Case closed. Perfect stark banner is perfect.

Date: 2011-03-21 07:01 pm (UTC)Yeah, with Nancy, even the original photo was weird, with Woll's hand disappearing into a light blur. It was a cool pic.
